It’s smart to be prepared with a few date questions when going on a first, second, or third date. Asking open-ended questions (questions that require more than just a one word or “yes” or “no” answer) will break the ice, keep the conversation moving, and help you get to know your date better.

Ask questions in a casual manner and use them sparingly. They should spark the conversation but not be the whole conversation. It’s easy for a few innocent inquiries to start sounding like an interrogation, so take time between questions to let your date respond. Always listen politely.

Keep your questions lighthearted and neutral. Unless you met your date at a political rally or church, this isn’t the time to engage in a debate about politics or religion. Safer territories to inquire about are; your date’s job, hobbies, favorite films or music, recent concerts or theater events that she’s attended.  You can ask about places she’s traveled to or would like to travel to in the future.

If the mood is right, asking a few romantically-oriented questions can steer the conversation in a more passionate direction. Inquire about your date’s idea of the perfect romantic date.  What qualities does she look for in a partner?  What’s the most important element in a relationship or the most appealing features to her of the opposite sex?

To turn, take the conversation to a philosophical level, ask your date questions about her outlook on life. Is she an optimist? What is her passion in life? Who’s her hero and why?

Finally, using humor can help keep the conversation lively and upbeat. You’d be surprised what you can learn about your date by his responses to even funny questions – like what superhero he’d secretly like to be?  What his costume was last Halloween? Or whether or not he’s a Star Wars fan.
